Everest Trek 2014 Information

Join Our Team!

Are you a fan of The Rest of Everest and think it would be the adventure of a lifetime to visit Base Camp yourself–and have the experience documented on the podcast? Well, then consider joining us as we return to Everest during the Spring 2014 climbing season!

Chris Marquardt, Monika Andrae and I will once again be holding The Highest Photography Workshop in the World by trekking back to Everest’s famed South Base Camp in Nepal as well as making a summit of 5545m (18,192′) Kala Patthar.

We and our cameras have been there before and the experience became Season 4 of The Rest of Everest. If you’ve watched the show, then you know that I consider that 2009 trek to be one of the most enjoyable trips I’ve ever undertaken.

Quite possibly the most fun I’ve ever had.

Just like in 2009, you’ll meet The 2014 Team in Kathmandu where we’ll spend a few days touring ancient temples and cities and generally taking in the “vibe” of this unique region. We’ll then take a quick 35 minute flight to the infamous landing strip at Lukla where our trek will begin. We’ll visit the bustling mountain town of Namche Bazaar where we’ll start to get a feel for the rich and friendly Sherpa culture that permeates the foothills and high peaks of the Everest region.

We pride ourselves on the diverse nature of our trekking teams. Whatever your gender, photography level, travel experience or country of origin, we’re excited to have you with us as one of our “team photographers.”

The One Less Traveled By

On our previous trek we continued up the Khumbu Valley from Namche Bazaar but this year we will not be retracing out past steps. Nope, the 2014 Everest trek will not be a repeat of 2009. Instead, we’ll be heading out of Namche and climbing up the neighboring Thame Valley towards Renjo Pass at 5338m (17,515′), the Gokyo Valley, Gokyo Ri Pass 5340m (17,520′) the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Pass 5420m (17,782′). After topping out on Cho La we’ll make our way towards the little encampment of Labuche where we’ll rejoin the classic Khumbu trek towards Mount Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. After visiting Everest, we’ll quickly descend back to Lukla via the standard trekking route through the Khumbu Valley so you won’t miss a thing!

Why take this slightly longer and more adventurous route to Everest? Well, it’s a rare opportunity to visit Everest via a lesser known and more remote path that will reward our additional effort with astounding views of several 8000m peaks including panoramas of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu! This route sees only a fraction of the number of trekkers that are encountered on the standard Khumbu Valley trek. This means that the villages we will pass through have been able to retain more of their unique and traditional ways of life.

If you’ve dreamed of visiting Everest, this is the way to do it. This is the Grand Tour of the Khumbu Region. As always, this will be an all-inclusive trek with full Sherpa support including guides, cooks, porters and yaks.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to not only get to know Everest intimately, but to have your adventure professionally documented on The Rest of Everest and to make lifelong friends in the process.

The Details

Our Workshop Trek will be held from May 5th to May 26th, 2014. While there will be the opportunity to camp in tents at Everest Base Camp, we are “upgrading” accommodations on this adventure by lodging in quaint teahouses for the duration of the trek. This way we’ll sleep better, stay warmer and have a much more comfortable workshop.

We want as many people as possible to visit this unique part of the world with us so we’re aggressively pricing the Everest Workshop Trek at $7000 $6299 ($300 single supplement if desired). Participants are responsible for round-trip airfare from their country of residence to Kathmandu, mandatory evacuation and travel insurance, visa fees, and airport exit fees.
